Are iPads expected to replace textbooks?

Digital versions of textbooks are increasingly becoming available from publishers, and we certainly plan to explore the potential of this technology. Not only do digital texts remove a significant weight from student backpacks, but they are easily updated and also allow students to highlight text and insert notes for later reference and studying. We are looking at several publishers who are offering iPad-compatible versions of titles.

What iPad peripherals and accessories will be provided?

Each iPad will be distributed with a folio-style case that offers protection to all surfaces of the iPad and folds into a stand for typing or upright viewing. A padded iPad sleeve will also be provided for extra protection. In addition, the iPad comes with an AC power adapter for charging the battery.

How will Internet access be filtered on the iPads?

While at school, the iPads will utilize the school’s Wi-Fi service. Central's firewall provides a shield, as it currently does for all our computers, for the iPads as well, so inappropriate material should not be able to be downloaded. Parents will be asked to monitor what students are accessing and downloading at home and ensure it is appropriate. Central's iPad Policies and Acceptable Use Policy will detail what is appropriate on an iPad that is owned by the school and used both at school and at home.

What grade levels will be involved in the first roll out of the iPads? When will they be in the students' hands?

Students in grades 9-12 will be the first ones to begin with iPads, but it is our hope to eventually have iPads extend to the lower grades over the next few years.
